DR.R.K.Shanmugam College of Arts & Science was established in 1997 by DR.R.K.Shanmugam Educational Trust that was initiated by great ideological and service minded Doctors, Engineers and industrialists with true vision and mission of giving culture oriented higher education to the needy students in the region of Kallakurichi and Kalvarayan Hills of Villupuram District, Tamilnadu. It was the first Co-education Institution of Villupuram District.

College crest is sacred combination of the Sun God, the Ascending  Garuda, the Book of Wisdom and Blossoming Lotus Flower. The College mantra slogan is“WE CAN”.

The College was incepted with the ambition of educating the rural and tribal based and economically backward students who were only dreaming of education. The College started with 3 UG Courses but now it offers 8 PG Courses, 9 UG Courses, 2 M.Phil., Courses and a Ph.D., in commerce.

There was no Higher Education Institution in and around Kallakurichi which has around 500 villages.  About 90% of the students who get through +2 education were not in the position to get into Higher Education. So, social service minded Doctors and Philanthropist got permission from Government in the year 1997.

Our Vision has come true by sending out around 9000 first generation graduates successfully.  Being an institution run by Professionalist and Educationist we give equal importance to discipline too.  Almost all our students are well placed in Government Jobs, MNC Companies, Private organizations, Uniform services and some of them are Self Employed.

As it is a service oriented institution, we have the affordable fee structure which also can be paid in various easy installments.

We have 28 buses to cater the services to the students coming from far away places of about 50 KMs. We also have separate hostels for Boys and Girls which cater nutritious diet at minimum cost. Apart from getting state and central government scholarship, we also give trust educational scholarship for economically backward students and physically challenged students. Ours is the one and only Institutions in and around the district for the private institution to have NCC (It is Proud to narrate that our student Naveen Kumar had Participated in Republic day parade at New Delhi). We also have NSS, YRC, RRC, R.K.Narayan Literary Association, Citizen Consumer Club, Blood Donors Club etc…through which we create awareness in various activities.

Though the students are from rural area, they are given awareness for blood donation and we have Blood Donors club also. Our Institution is getting state and district level Award for being the highest number of blood donations in every academic year.  In cultural activities, our students are getting awards in various competitions and they give regular programs in DD Podhigai TV and All India Radio.

Our College stands ahead at University level in Kabbadi, Hockey, Badminton, apart from other games and athletic Activities. Roughly 10 students are selected for National level sports every year.

In Academic side, we regularly get University Rank to our credit. We conduct International, National and State level Seminars at regular intervals by all departments.

We also encourage our students in social activities in which they adopt orphanage home and be there for a day, give food and needed materials under Pidi Arisi Thittam.  Our Health Inspector Training students were part of Kajha Disaster Management and where there for 20 days to do the best services for the needy.

We also have Matric School from Pre.kg to 10^th std. College of Education (B.Ed.), Institute of Health Science. As per our Honourable Prime Minister’s remarks, an institution should have Primary education and upto Ph.D., level, our Institution gives education from Pre.K.G. to Ph.D.
